The proposed monument embodies multiple experiences as is endured when a community faces a hurricane. It engages you from the exterior, be it higher up from a nearby building or as you approach it on the ground level. When viewed from above you perceive an open path through a dense arrangement of forms.
This path replicates the one created by the hurricane through the island. The structure rises from the ground, representing the Puerto Rican survivors that gathered to lift each other up through the storm. As you begin the processional journey through the monument, the array of metal posts consumes you as you are now losing your connection with the exterior.
This sense of compression is enhanced when you look up and feel the weight of the rain – a personification of the hurricane’s relentless pressure. As you make your way through the path, you sense a survivor’s sentiment of endurance and look back to remember the lives lost.
